Instruction and Testing

READING, SPELLING, WRITING AND MATH INSTRUCTION FOR DYSLEXIA

For individuals with dyslexia to be successful in school, at work, and in their communities, they must receive instruction in reading, spelling, writing, and math that is specifically tailored to fit their way of learning. All MDI centers offer instruction using an adapted form of the internationally known Orton-Gillingham Approach. All instruction is direct, structured, and delivered with multisensory teaching techniques. Most instruction is presented in a one-on-one situation; occasionally group instruction is appropriate. The goal is to enable students to develop independent skills.

All MDI instructors are trained and supervised by Fellows of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, a national certification body incorporated under New York State Education Law.

TESTING

Academic Skills Evaluations are offered at all MDI centers. While an Academic Skills Evaluation does not result in an official diagnosis of dyslexia, it will determine whether there are indications of dyslexia and whether specialized remedial reading instruction is appropriate.

MDI also provides comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations for dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning disorders at the Abrams Teaching Center in Lansing and at the Detroit Metro Center in Berkley. MDI plans to expand this service to all centers throughout the state. This type of evaluation can result in an official diagnosis. An official DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) diagnosis is necessary when you are trying to qualify for services at school or at work. These neuropsychological evaluations are conducted by Robert D. Smith, PhD, a licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist.

Not sure if MDI is the right place for you? The facts of each case will be examined during the intake interview. If it is determined that an evaluation for dyslexia is not right for you, Dr. Smith can evaluate for many other types of conditions. If none of these evaluations is indicated, we will direct you as to where you need to go next. We do not perform tests that you do not need. All of this will be discussed thoroughly with you after the intake interview and before any testing takes place so you can make an informed decision about the best course for you.
