Camp Starlight 2008 (June 22-28, 2008)
Welcome to Camp Starlight, Where Children Shine... This one week camp is designed for children and young adults with dyslexia by the Michigan Dyslexia Institute / Dyslexia Association of America. This exciting opportunity will provide our youth with the chance to gain a better understanding of dyslexia, look to role models, build self-esteem and social skills, and most importantly, have FUN. The camp life atmosphere gives the children a chance to step out of the classroom and interact with other dyslexics in a positive environment. We have an excellent program planned for the campers as well as involvement for the parents. An experienced staff, special speakers, a fun and educational program, and a beautiful location are the ingredients for an outstanding week at Camp Starlight.
Goal/Objectives
The program on dyslexia will be carried out each day in large and small group activities. Emphasis will be placed on the following goals and objectives:
- Help campers understand why they have trouble learning with conventional instruction and to provide ideas for dealing with it;
- Teach campers about dyslexia and provide examples of successful people with dyslexia;
- Demonstrate how campers can become strong and independent learners;
- Encourage campers to deal with their weaknesses and build on their strengths;
- Teach campers to advocate for themselves at school and in the community;
- Use the campers' skills to plan and carry out role-playing skits about dyslexia;
The MDI staff will carry out this program with the assistance of the YMCA camp staff. Other young men and women with dyslexia who will be in residence at the camp will assist the staff.
Evening Programs
Each night after dinner, the campers will participate in fun activities. Many activities have been planned, including: Jello Wars, dances, campfires, Counselor Hideout, and "Camping Under the Stars"
