MDI began
as a nonprofit,
educational organization in 1982 to
serve children and adults with dyslexia
throughout Michigan. Over the years MDI
has emerged as a unique resource and
significant educational force in the
state. It has attracted national
attention and has served as a model for
other states. To meet the demand for
services, information and consultation
from groups and individuals in other
states, the Dyslexia Association of
America (DAA) was developed in 1994.
From
the beginning, MDI/DAA has been under
the continuing leadership of Executive
Director, Kay M. Howell, M.A.,F/AOGPE.
The training and language evaluation
programs were developed by John C.
Howell, Ph.D.,F/AOGPE. Throughout,
success has depended on the effort and
dedication of the directors, the highly
trained and committed staff and
instructors, the caring volunteers, the
generous contributions from individuals
and corporations, and grants from
foundations. Thousands in Michigan and
in the nation have received information,
training, and educational services in
their local communities because so many
people care and have become involved.
While proud of its history and
accomplishments, MDI/DAA will not rest
until the "new world for those with
dyslexia" exists.
MDI believes that
teamwork with other groups, community
partnerships, development of volunteers
and the assertive leadership of those
with dyslexia will bring about this new
world. |
