TEACHER TRAINING

The educational needs of persons with dyslexia are of utmost importance. Appropriate instruction in reading, spelling, writing, and math is essential to success from preschool through college. MDI’s teacher training programs address these needs.

Teacher training begins with the Decoding/Encoding Seminar and Practicum. This seminar prepares the instructor to teach reading, writing, and spelling at the beginning stage of reading development to those students who exhibit characteristics of dyslexia. Practice and continued educational programs develop competency to teach language skills at all stages of reading and writing development. Math training is available; the basic Decoding/Encoding Seminar is a pre-requisite.

All teacher training is provided under the guidance of trainers who are Fellows of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, a national certification and accreditation body incorporated under New York State Education Law. Further, the content of the training programs reflects the curricular criteria established by the Academy. Parents, teachers (general and special education), literacy volunteers, potential MDI instructors, and college students are all welcome to attend. Over the years, MDI has trained over 2,000 instructors. MDI also provides consultation for program development and training for school systems.

With respect to the listed MDI teacher training programs, note is made that MDI is the only organization in the state engaged in a broad range of Orton-Gillingham training programs whose principal training staff are certified Fellows of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE).
