BEGINNING AND CONTINUED EDUCATION CLASSES AND PROGRAMS 2012
This is a list of scheduled Michigan Dyslexia Institute (MDI) classes for the 2012 calendar year. With respect to the listed MDI teacher training programs, note is made that MDI is the only organization in the state engaged in a broad range of Orton-Gillingham training programs whose principal training staff are certified Fellows of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). Kay M. Howell, M.A., Fellow/AOGPE, and Ann Beatty, Fellow/AOGPE, will teach the classes listed below.
The Academy, approved by the Board of Regents of the State University of New York and operating under New York State Education Law, is the sole organization in the country established expressly to certify persons and accredit programs in the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The Academy certifies individuals at four levels (Subscriber, Associate, Certified, and Fellow). Fellows possess the highest level of professional competency and experience recognized by the Academy.
The Institute is further unique in Michigan in that its training programs follow the high curricular and practice standards set by the Academy for its several levels of certification. Persons taking MDI training should consider working toward Academy status. Information about such a goal can be provided by any Academy Fellow on the MDI staff, but full information should be obtained from the Academy (telephone 844-373-8919, website
www.ortonacademy.org, or e-mail
www.oga@mohawk.net).
Please register early for classes to permit us to prepare handouts and determine room arrangements. All fees are to be paid upon registration unless arrangements are approved by MDI. A $100 non-refundable registration fee is due when registering for a D/E class, with the balance due on the first day of class. MDI reserves the right to cancel any class for lack of minimum registration. In that event, all fees will be returned.
PLEASE NOTE: Basic criteria for application to the Academy for Associate Level membership include successful completion of the Beginning Orton-Gillingham Seminar plus three additional observations spread out over the next eight to twelve months and completion of the required readings. The observations should be arranged through MDI with the Fellow in charge of your practice teaching. Note that Associate Members must work under the supervision of a Fellow in order to maintain their Academy status.
