Camp Starlight 2010 (June 27 - July 3, 2010)

Presented in collaboration with the YMCA of Lansing, Camp Starlight is a one-week overnight camp specifically for children with dyslexia. The camp program provides our youth with the chance to gain a better understanding of dyslexia, look to role models, build self-esteem and social skills, and most importantly, have FUN. The camp atmosphere gives campers an opportunity to step out of the classroom and interact with other dyslexics in a positive, supportive environment. We have an excellent program planned for the campers, as well as involvement for the parents. An experienced staff, special speakers, a fun and educational program, and a beautiful location are the ingredients for an outstanding week at Camp Starlight.

Goal/Objectives

The program on dyslexia will be carried out each day in large and small group activities. Emphasis will be placed on the following goals and objectives:
  • Provide information that will lead to a better understanding of what dyslexia is and how to work with it
  • Demonstrate that campers have the ability to become strong and independent learners
  • Encourage campers to reinforce their strengths and to transform limitations into positive outcomes
  • Teach responsibility and self-advocacy in school and in the community
  • Present adult role models who discuss how they used their own dyslexia as an advantage to become successful in their work and in their personal lives
The MDI staff will carry out this program with the assistance of the YMCA camp staff.

Evening Programs

Each night after dinner, the campers will participate in a variety of fun activities. Some of the activities planned include Jello Wars, dances, campfires, Counselor Hideout, and camping under the stars.
